What Is Two-Phase Treatment in Orthodontics?
When most people picture orthodontic treatment, they think of traditional braces and single-phase treatment. This method involves one continuous process after all baby teeth have been lost. Two-phase treatment, on the other hand, involves two separate stages, typically involving braces or aligners. This method enables Dr. Hutta, Dr. Kamrani, and Dr. Sachdev to address issues early, before they become bigger problems later on.
Whether our team has already discussed two-phase treatment with you or you’re exploring different options, it’s essential to understand what this process entails and why it can be particularly effective for certain patients in your family.
Phase One: Guiding Growth
Phase One typically begins when a child still has a mix of baby teeth and permanent teeth. The goal at this stage is to guide jaw development, correct bite and spacing issues, and create the space needed for permanent teeth to grow correctly. To do this, our orthodontists may recommend appliances such as palatal expanders, partial braces, or other fixed or removable tools. This part of the process can even improve airway flow and support better breathing. Depending on your child’s unique needs, Dr. Hutta, Dr. Kamrani, and Dr. Sachdev will select the appliance that best suits their needs during Phase One.
Phase Two: Refining the Bite and Tooth Positions—Completing the Smile Journey
The second phase can’t begin until all the patient’s permanent teeth have grown in. At this stage, we can use braces, our in-house clear aligners, or another type of treatment to fine-tune alignment and bite function. Unlike Phase One, which focuses on significant developmental changes and making large adjustments, Phase Two is all about precision and detail, making adjustments that improve function and lead to straighter teeth. The second phase builds on the strong foundation laid earlier and completes your journey toward lasting oral health and greater confidence.
How Braces Align Teeth

Braces are a reliable and useful treatment that have helped many achieve healthy and beautiful smiles. At Hutta Orthodontic Specialists, we love to use cutting-edge techniques and technology, including 3D CT scanners, to ensure that your experience is comfortable, efficient, and tailored to your unique smile.
What to Expect During Single-Phase Orthodontic Treatment
Braces are a well-known and effective method of aligning teeth and correcting bite issues. At Hutta Orthodontic Specialists, we offer a range of advanced options, including Damon Braces or clear aligners. Damon Braces gently guide teeth into position using low-friction forces. Clear aligners are another option that provides a nearly invisible way to correct your smile using a series of custom, removable trays.
Single-phase orthodontic treatment typically begins after all adult teeth have erupted, usually around the age of 12 or older. While single-phase braces are highly effective, they’re not always the best option for children with early developmental concerns. In these cases, two-phase orthodontic treatment may be recommended, even while baby teeth are still present, to help guide growth before any of these options are implemented. This is why, at Hutta Orthodontic Specialists, all our treatments are built around the most advanced options, not traditional braces.
What Happens in Between Phase One and Phase Two in Two-Phase Treatment?

After Phase One is complete, there is a resting period before Phase Two begins. This in-between stage is very important and perfectly normal! All orthodontic appliances from Phase One are removed before Phase Two begins. During this break, you can expect your child’s remaining baby teeth to fall out, permanent teeth to finish coming in, and their jaw to continue growing and developing naturally. Most children won’t need active appliances during the resting period, though a retainer or space maintainer may be used to preserve the progress made in Phase One. If your child is in this stage, there is no need to worry; Dr. Hutta, Dr. Kamrani, and Dr. Sachdev will continue to monitor their development with regular check-ins to ensure everything is on track for a successful Phase Two.
Is Two-Phase Orthodontic Treatment More Effective for Kids?
Two-phase treatment isn’t necessary for every child. However, for the right patient, it can make a meaningful difference. When dental or jaw issues are identified early, addressing them in two carefully timed stages often encourages better long-term results. If you’re wondering whether two-phase treatment might be right for your child, Dr. Hutta, Dr. Sachdev, and Dr. Kamrani are here to help. They’ll evaluate your child’s smile, monitor their growth over time, and explain whether two-phase treatment is necessary.
